Advent Greetings and Christmas Thanks
With Advent our Church starts a new year and, as is customary, at such a time we experience some urging within to look back and to look forward.
As we look back, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions really want to express our appreciation to each and every one of you who have supported our Sisters, our works and our projects during 2005. Without the support of your prayers and your donations our year would have been less than it has been. Thank you so much. Agencies too have also contributed generously to our major works, so there are untold other donors across the world for whom we invite your prayers.
As we look forward, we do so with confidence because we know that your support will continue, and that the Good News that is Jesus-Emmanuel will bless you abundantly, and bring His Gifts of Love and Peace into each of your lives.
For 2006 we have an exciting new initiative in our Formation programme on the horizon. We are building an international Formation Centre in the Philippines so that all our Sisters preparing for Final Vows will undertake the same programme of formation for nine months. This commitment to formation is costly, but will strengthen the quality of missionary spirit in our young Sisters.

Mission Appeals around the Parishes
In all the dio
ceses
of England and Wales there is, once a year, an appeal made in every parish on
behalf of the foreign missions. For nearly 10 years now our Sisters have been
one of the women’s missionary Orders to participate in this appeal work. It is a
wonderful opportunity to share with parishioners the work of our own Sisters and
at the same time to share the Church’s message that through baptism all are
missionaries – each responsible for spreading the Good News of Jesus.
The Bishops have asked for this appeal money to be used for the training of Sisters – postulants and novices. But there are also past pupils and friends who give money specifically for the mission works of our Sisters.
Sisters Rose Mullan, Joan Stewart and Marie Carrick are joined from time to time in these appeals by Sisters from other provinces or on home leave from the missions.
Congratulations to all who have helped with these appeals. Many mission works have benefited from your hard work. Photo: Sister Marie at the pulpit ready for action.
Report from Myanmar Update on Missionary Animation
Each year the Pontifical Holy Childhood Association helps to support the missionary work of our Sisters in Myanmar among children and young people. Most of their work is among the Chin and Karen ethnic peoples in villages where life is simple and very basic. The Sisters live in some of these villages, caring for the orphans, living off the land by cultivating their own food as the people do, teaching catechism and encouraging participation in the activities of the local Church. In larger centers the Sisters also train the young women to improve their practical skills for living and self-sufficiency.

Update from the Manobo Girls’ Dormitory, Kulaman
Our Manobo girls are diligent, hardworking and determined to study. And these days they have role models amongst their own people to encourage them. Several girls who have been through the dormitory are now in Tertiary level, taking up nursing and teaching. The depth of their love for their tribe continues to impel them to struggle to finish their college education so that they can serve their tribe as professionals. Fathers and mothers take a turn to help out with daily tasks around the property while the children themselves are the future of their own Dulangan Manobo tribe.
Photos: Left – Carmen, Imon, Maylene and Aling are already doing tertiary studies in nursing or teaching.

Mission Sunday in Dhaka
The six missionary Congregations working in Dhaka - PIME Fathers and Sisters, OMI Fathers, SMSM Sisters and RNDMS - prepare together each year for a major youth gathering for Mission Sunday. A good number of the younger RNDMs are involved in the activities – Eucharist, procession, exhibitions, talks, presentations, items, theme song, and of course food!! The charism, spirit and work of each Congregation features, and there are plenty of lively question and answer sessions. Mission is alive and well in Dhaka!
