Report from India North East <by Sister Ida Mary Kharboi> 1. Rebuilding our school, Tluh [previous report #2-2002]

After the collapse of our school in the cyclone of May 2002, causing the death of two of our teachers, we did not have facilities to teach the children until much later in the year when the Block Department put up two small classrooms for us. Then in 2003 when the RNDM Solidarity Tluh studentsPhoto [left]: The Tluh primary students outside their 2 classroom block building with Sister Vijaya, their teacher

money was sent to us, we were able to start planning to clear a site for a proper school. The RNDM Solidarity money is being used to clear the site, and to purchase bricks, stones, sand and iron rods. The local people are making their own financial contribution to our new school too. We are very grateful that our proper school is now on the way.

2. Playground for Cheerapunjee [previous report #1-2003] <by Sister Euphrasie Nadon>

Cheerapunjee claims to be the wettest place on earth – with the highest annual rainfall. Even in the monsoon weather, when it is raining cats and dogs, the 1300 children come to school wrapped up in rain coats or plastic. So the asphalted playground for the two schools and the hostel has been a wonderful gift to everyone – thanks to RNDM Solidarity and the school community which matched our gift. The big steps at one end of the playground enable the hostel students to have a meal out of doors - if the weather permits!

Report from Kenya < by Sister Felicitas>

Baraka za Ibrahim Primary School, Kibera [ previous report - #1 / 2003].

Kibera is a large slum district in Nairobi and our Sisters have been working to support the Baraka za Ibrahim school for a number of years. During 2003 the school presented its first class of Standard Eight students for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education - a wonderful effort on the part of teachers and students.Kibera teachers and students

Sister Felicitas writes ‘Apart from academic activities, we form children to be disciplined and well behaved, instilling positive values so that they can be useful and responsible citizens. We do this through counselling and faith formation." A number of students received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation in December 2003. One quite remarkable success in 2003 was in the field of music. The children competed in the Nairobi schools music festival and went on to perform in the national competition, winning awards and being commended for the excellence of their performance. Their own compositions focused on themes of child rights, child labour, education for girls, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS.

Extension to Ndondol study library [previous report #2-2002]

During September and October 2003 local workers were employed, with RNDM Solidarity money, to build an extension on the end of the convent building to provide better facilities for the study library which the Sister had started in order to help the local students. The first library was little more than a book store, and students wishing to use the reference material had to use outdoor desks and chairs. Nevertheless the library became very popular, and the books were being very well used, as few students in Ndondol have books in their homes. When the funding for the extension arrived, the first job was to make the bricks., and that had to wait until the end of the rainy season. But by the beginning of November the work was complete and the new library extension was soon ready for use.
