With Hope in My Heart

It feels like it was only yesterday when I first started going to school. I used to cry every time my mother left me there. I didn’t understand, I thought they didn’t want me. But later, I realized there was a reason I had to go through all of that.

Looking back, I remember those early days of studying. I had to walk 12 hours from our home to the school in the sitio. I was tired, and I wanted to tell my parents I couldn’t go on—but I didn’t have the heart to say it. My father always told me, “Megaga koh iya weh okon. Kaya mo yan, anak.” (“Be strong, my child. You can do it.”) I believed that my parents only wanted the best for me.

One of the best decisions they made was entrusting me to Delesan Kailawan (DK), so I could focus on my studies and grow in my cultural identity. I found friends—sisters—through my fellow dorm girls. Before, I couldn’t afford a notebook or a pen. Now, I can write my stories with all the supplies I need. I’m also proud to say that I’ve developed my talent in Adal (Traditional Menubu Dance)

I never imagined that Delesan Kailawan would be the key to my future dream: to finish my studies. I am deeply thankful for the opportunity given to me, for the care of the staff and sisters, and for the generosity of our benefactors.

Just a few months ago, I graduated from Senior High School. I still can’t believe I made it. The journey had many challenges, struggles, and pain—but I held onto my dream. Even when the road was hard, I felt a strong desire pushing me forward. I remain hopeful because I know there are people who continue to believe in me and inspire me. I know this is a blessing from God, and it reminds me every day that I must keep going—not just for myself, but for my family, my community, and my younger sisters in the dorm.

My name is    Halya Tagaken, a future college student, and I will continue to chase my dream—with hope in my heart and fire in my spirit.
